Unexpectedly running out of fuel can be frustrating, to say the very least.
And for one school in Scotland, it was exactly that.
Back in January, Methlick School in Aberdeenshire was forced to close after thieves stole their supply of heating oil from their on-site storage tank. With no fuel to heat the school during the sub-zero temperatures of winter in North Scotland, pupils were sent home and remained off school until a new delivery arrived.
The police were called to investigate the theft. However, after two weeks of inquiries, it became apparent that no crime had in fact been committed and the tank ‘had simply run dry’.
There is no suggestion anyone had been deliberately mislead.
Aberdeenshire Council launched their own follow-up investigation and have recently concluded that there was “miscommunication”.
A spokesperson said, “We conducted a detailed investigation into the matter which confirmed the fuel was not stolen.
“The tank had in fact simply run dry and the investigation found there was no malicious intent in the miscommunication.
“Nonetheless, we have reviewed our procedures to ensure the proper verification of incidents before they are shared publicly and to ensure that such a situation does not arise again.”
