Greener, Eco-Friendly Festivals & Events with Crown Oil’s HVO Fuel

The Show Must Go On; But it’s Time for ‘Greener’ more ‘Eco-Friendly’ Festivals & Events!

Creamfields, Leeds & Reading Festivals and Notting Hill Carnival all coped with the avalanche of avid music fans enjoying of the biggest events in the UK. But this year’s music scene feels a little different: sustainability has taken centre stage. With a looming sense of fear that surrounds global warming and the government’s commitment to reach net zero emissions by 2050, both public and private sectors are under huge pressure to lessen their environmental impact, and festival organisers are no exception. We’re delighted to provide a fossil fuel alternative to help UK festivals achieve this – HVO fuel.

It’s estimated that around 23,500 tonnes of waste are produced every year at UK music festivals, from the plastic cups, plates, left behind tents, glitter and much more that adds to the fun. But whilst the focus on the removal of single-use plastics and pollution is hugely important, it’s part of a much bigger puzzle. Finding fossil fuel alternatives for transport and generators is key in helping reduce the effects of global warming.

Festivals use a significant amount of energy as they rely heavily on portable diesel generators to power the impressive lighting and music, and also use a huge amount of energy to transport equipment to and from the event. A recent report has revealed that UK festivals use 380 million litres of diesel every year, producing an equivalent 1.2 million tonnes of CO2. That’s about the same as the annual emissions from Malta, which is home to a population of just under 500,000 people.

The report adds that each UK event could reduce its diesel consumption by up to 40% by replacing diesel with renewables and hybrid battery technologies.

The use of one alternative in particular – HVO fuel – is on the rise due to its improved price competitiveness, increased accessibility and direct drop-in function.

HVO fuel is a second-generation diesel alternative that eliminates net CO2 and reduces NOx, PM and CO emissions. The clean-burning, high-quality fuel is a low carbon power solution for the event industry to achieve true sustainability as it’s made from renewable sources such as waste vegetable oils and animal fats.

HVO also has several benefits over standard diesel: up to a 90% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions, zero sulphur emissions and reduced noise pollution. With zero FAME and fossil content, the green fuel is a valuable means for event organisers to meet their environmental and corporate social responsibility requirements.

A handful of UK festivals have already made the switch to HVO fuel, including Glastonbury which powers its generators on HVO and a number of its locations using hybrid thermal-solar generators and battery storage systems.

Crown HVO can be used as a direct drop-in replacement for regular diesel, so festival and event organisers needn’t worry about having to empty existing fuel stocks.
