HVO Fuelled Vehicles to Help Hounslow Council Slash Emissions

Crown HVO fuel is helping businesses and organisations across the UK to lower their carbon footprint. Our Hounslow Council case study details their experience of using Crown HVO fuel

London Borough of Hounslow Council has been using HVO fuel in place of fossil diesel to significantly reduce net CO2 emissions in their fleet. Moving towards a cleaner fuel throughout their operations will bring them closer to achieving their goal of net zero carbon by 2030 as well as help them improve local air quality and emission levels.

We hope to convince our corporate sponsors to support a switch to HVO in the near future. It would represent a significant CO2 saving in our fleet which has many years of useful life left before the potential switch to electric or other technology and may even prove a longer-term option. We’ve had no issues and all our drivers, as well as our workshop, have been really happy to be involved in the trial which has been wholly successful. I hope London Borough of Hounslow will give us the green light to use it in the near future for good.

The HVO trial

We installed a dedicated 10,000-litre CrownCube sustainable fuel station at their Lampton360 depot which is operated by Hounslow Council. Our fuel stations offer superior security for stationary fuelling and are a popular choice for customers wanting to trial a low emission fuel. Featuring a 110% bunded design that complies with BS799 Part 5, the CrownCube ensures an environmentally safe solution for bulk fuel storage.

Although HVO is fully miscible with fossil diesel, using a fuel station also allows Hounslow Council to start with a fresh batch of HVO to ensure that any sludge or contaminants from their diesel tank do not compromise the fuel’s benefits.

As a drop-in fuel, HVO can be put directly into Hounslow Council’s vehicles, with no need for expensive infrastructure replacements or modifications.

The sustainable diesel alternative is produced from certified renewable materials that bring huge benefits because of the way it’s produced; the process results in a high-quality biobased renewable fuel that burns cleaner, cuts exhaust emissions, and can be stored for up to 10 years without negative effects.

HVO is a renewable diesel fuel rather than biodiesel, and is a mixture of fully saturated hydrocarbons, free from sulphur and aromatics, unlike mineral diesel. It also provides improved cold-start qualities as it’s more resistant to gelling in cold temperatures compared to mineral diesel.

HVO achieves the following benefits for Hounslow Council’s fleet:

  • Up to 90% reduction of net CO2 emissions
  • Reduction of notifiable NOx, CO and PM emissions
  • Better local air quality as HVO is a clean burning fuel
  • Up to 10-year storage life
  • Drop-in diesel replacement
  • Year-round performance
  • FAME and ester-free – reduced risk of engine issues
  • Odourless & free from aromatics, sulphur and metals

HVO’s credentials are being increasingly noted – proven by a 100% uptake in the last year and we hope that other local authorities will follow Hounslow Council’s lead to easily and drastically reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
